SUNY Statement on Passage of $1.9 Trillion COVID-19 Relief Package
“Today’s passage of the $1.9 trillion pandemic rescue package is
pivotal for the future of SUNY as we continue to navigate this unprecedented
and challenging time. The stimulus nearly erases a $500 million operating
deficit incurred over the last 12 months and provides direct emergency
financial relief to the students who’ve been hardest hit by the pandemic.
It means help is on the way for students struggling to pay for food, rent,
course materials, and other basic needs as they pursue their education. We want
to thank Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, New York’s top-ranking
Representative Hakeem Jeffries, and the entire New York State delegation who
supported this package. We appreciate their partnership with SUNY and our
campuses, for truly understanding COVID’s impact on our students, and for
leading the way to secure this crucial funding to stabilize our campuses
financially. Now we can focus on the services and supports that our students
depend on as we look forward to working closely with state legislators in the
coming days to secure additional state funding, which allows us to invest and
expand services for students and broaden access to education for all New
Yorkers.” -- SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Merryl Tisch and
Chancellor Jim Malatras
