The Pain and Privilege of Being Professionally 'Woke'
The Western New York Diversity Officers (WNYDO) Council
Vision:
To lead the Western New York Diversity Officers (WYNDO) toward inclusive
excellence through educational collaborations, institutional transformation,
and ethical leadership in support of faculty, staff, students and members of
the surrounding community.
Mission:
The Western New York Diversity Officers Group (WYNDO) serves as the
preeminent voice for diversity and equity officers in the Western New York
Higher Education Region by supporting our collective efforts to lead our
institutions toward the attainment of the following goals and outcomes:
- Identify and share best practices to drive systemic change within
our region
- Leverage resources to maximize outcomes
- Collaborate with other diversity and inclusion efforts within the
region to advance equity and systemic change throughout our community
- Produce and disseminate empirical evidence through research to
inform diversity initiatives
- Provide professional development for current and aspiring diversity
and equity officers
- Inform and influence national and local policies
- Create and foster networking opportunities
In this session, panelists will describe the navigation within the ‘
being woke’ minefield in terms of the professional negotiation between
how being aware or being conscious can also be terrifying or isolating when
placed as a ‘achieved benchmark’ on educating oneself to the
injustices that occur across the world. This perceived state of mind, never
fully allows you to be fully comfortable or complacent because once you are
deemed ‘woke’, one can never unlearn the knowledge nor seem
unwilling to share the knowledge.
