Guest Poet & Translator Thom Saterlee March 15
Translator Thom Satterlee will reading his translations of Danish Per Aage
Brandt's poetry on Friday, March 15, from 12-12:50 in Building 12 , room
12-129. The event, sponsored by MCC's Creative Arts Committee, is free and open
to the MCC community.
Thom Satterlee is a writer and translator. His books of translation include
These Hands: Poetry of Per Aage Brandt (host, 2011) and The
Hangman's Lament: Poems of Henrik Nordbrandt (Green Integer, 2003), and
If I Were a Suicide Bomber (Open Letter 2017). He is the author of
Burning Wyclif, chosen by Robert Fink for the 2006 Walt McDonald
First-Book Poetry Series and published by Texas Tech University Press. This
volume was also selected as a 2007 American Library Association Notable Book
and as a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize. His work has received
many additional recognitions, including two fellowships from the National
Endowment for the Arts. He lives in Marion, Indiana.
Per Aage Brandt is a Danish writer, poet, linguist
and musician. He is Master of Arts in Romance Philology from the
University of Copenhagen (1971) & holds a Doctorate of Semiotics from the Sorbonne
University (1987). He has published a large number of books on the subjects
of semiotics, linguistics, culture, and music as well as poetry. Brandt's debut
as a poet began in 1969 with the poetry collection Poesi. He has since
then written several poetry collections and essays. He has also translated Molière and Marquis de Sade,
amongst others, and in 2000 he translated (or "re-wrote" in Danish) the poetry collection
Cantabile by Henrik,
the prince consort of Denmark. Some of his translations were subsequently
set to music in Frederik
Magle's symphonic
suite Cantabile.
