MCC Geospatial students conduct summer remote sensing & forestry research at the University of Maine
Casmir Brown and Bryon Carroll, students in MCC’s Geospatial
Information Science & Technology (GIST) and Geography program, worked in
Maine over the summer for an 8-week internship focused on geographic
information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and forestry-related fieldwork.
Casmir Brown and Bryon Carroll spent 8 weeks in Maine collecting and
processing field data acquired from satellites and drones for remote sensing
applications, particularly tree species composition and forest health. Under
the mentorship of Jonathon Little (Associate Professor of Geography) and Wayne
Howard (MCC GIS adjunct), as well as the Center for Advanced Forestry
Systems researchers at the University of Maine, the students spent time
acquiring and refining skills in the Wheatland Geospatial Lab on campus as well
as in the field in Maine’s working forests and coastal ecosystems.
Partnering with UMaine’s Dr. Aaron Weiskittel, Director
of NSF’s Center for Advanced Forestry Systems, Little successfully
applied for supplementary funding from NSF’s Skills Training in Advanced
Research & Technology (START) program for these two paid research
experiences. To build upon the summer work, Little and Howard plan to
offer two virtual internships for geospatial Capstone student’s spring of
2023 (GEG 239).
