International Education Week: COIL Class Discussion On Black Lives Matter and Police Brutality
Yesterday (Thursday, Nov. 19), as an example of COIL (collaborative online
international learning), Professor Natasha Christensen's sociology class on
race and ethnicity (SOC 201) met in a virtual classroom with a business class
in professional ethics from Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) located in Santo
Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The topic was the global response to the Black Lives Matter movement and
policing in both countries. 50 students from both countries participated in a
thoughtful and important discussion. Students started with an icebreaker that
initiated feedback on unexpected positive outcomes of virtual school. An
anonymous poll was then given to gauge student support of the Black Lives
Matter movement. Dr. Christensen facilitated the discussion using several
prompting questions and the students spent an hour sharing their experiences
with policing in their communities.
