A great Weekend for the Monroe Swimming and Diving Teams as they wrapped up Regional Championship action
This weekend's Region III Championship Meet saw the Monroe Swimming and
Diving teams get started to their post-season play. The Men secured the Team
Championships by accumulating 538 points while the women had a hard-fought meet
placing third overall with 332 points. The Monroe Coaching won staff of the
year honors for the Men's side as well. Aidan Ferguson had a great meet winning
Athlete of the Meet and Athlete of The Year for Region III. The Men also were
given the first ever Daniel Dubois Championship Award (WNYAC) that is given to
the Region III Team with the most overall in-season meet points.
The men demonstrated their dominance over the Region by winning all events
with the exception of 1M and 3M Diving, 100 Breaststroke and the 200
Backstroke. Meet records were established by Cameron Goodspeed in the 50 Breast
and the 100 IM where him and teammate Callum O'Neil engaged in a great battle.
Ferguson stared in the sprints winning the 100 back, 50 back, 50 free and 50
Fly setting a new meet record. Mike Laviani dominated all of the distance
events remaining undefeated in the region in the 500, 1000 and 1,650 Freestyle
(Event he all won at this meet). He added the 400 IM too as well. Callum O'Neil
continued to show great leadership on deck while winning the 200 IM, 200
Freestyle and putting up a solid performance in the 200 Fly. Nolan Shelmidine
joined in the fun by winning the 100 Fly and Alex Scaglione won the 100
freestyle as well. Carson Coleman punched his ticket to the NJCAA meet with a
dramatic start to the 200 Free in where he qualified for nationals in the first
50 splitting a 26.97. The Men won all 5 relays in dominating fashion as
well.
The MCC Women had some great swims. They lead the meet off with an upset win
in the 800 Freestyle relay. Kara Williamson had fierce competition the entire meet battling the
Regions top swimmers in all of her events finish second in the 50 free and 50
Fly. McKenna Briggs anchored the winning 800 relay and also won the 200
Free and had a lifetime swim in the 100 freestyle finishing second. Violet Jarreau-Landers had a lifetime meet as well as she
qualified for nationals in the 1,000-yard free and set a personal best in the
200 free and 100 free in relays at the meet. Em
ma Preski had her hands full in the distance free events placing
second in the 500, 1,000, and 1,650 hitting lifetime bests in all.
The next meet will be the National Tournament hosted by Indian River State
College in Ft. Pierce Florida on March 2nd through March 5th. Over the
next 3 weeks the Teams will be tapering for this highly competitive meet
against some of the best scholarship teams in the country. MCC Swimming and
Diving is a Non-Scholarship Program and looks to perform in the Non-Scholarship
Categories at Nationals.
