When the Fire Alarm Sounds!
Because real emergencies are so rare, many do not take the sounding of the
alarm seriously. Most people think that in the event of a real emergency they
will just naturally know what to do. But in situations where main routes are
blocked, people can get disoriented and panic. Studies show that large
percentages of employees do not know the best route out of the building if
their main route is blocked. Research also indicates that in less than 60
seconds, a fire can fill a room with enough smoke to make it disorienting and
difficult to find exits.
It is crucial to plan and practice building evacuation for a variety of
emergency scenarios. For instance... if the main hallway was blocked, do you
know where your closest alternative exit is? If you were unable to take the
stairs because of a leg injury, would you know what to do? Has your office
group or classroom group established a place to congregate outside the building
so that everyone can be accounted for in a real emergency?
To ensure your safety, plan ahead and whenever the alarm sounds,
assume it is a real emergency and quickly exit the building! Attached
is MCC's Emergency Evacuation Procedure and a complete list of Areas of
Assistance throughout our campuses.
