An Evening of Frederick Douglass with the Rochester Oratorio Society
The Rochester Oratorio Society (ROS) presents a preview of its commemorative
concert, "Frederick Douglass at 200," on Monday, February 5, in the MCC
Theatre, Building 4, 7:30-10:00 p.m. During this open rehearsal with piano, the
100-voice ensemble will prepare THE EMANCIPATION ORATORIO by SUNY-Geneseo
composer Glenn McClure, featuring texts of Frederick Douglass, Frances Harper,
and other abolitionists. This energetic piece combines Western New York,
Western African, and European texts, musical ideas, and instruments in an
appeal for justice and human rights.
This rehearsal is free, and no ticket is required to attend. As this
rehearsal is open, attendance for the entire evening is not expected.
The actual concert will take place on Friday, February 16, 2018, at 7:30
p.m. in the Hochstein Performance Hall, 50 Plymouth Avenue
North, in Rochester. Tickets for this historic event ($25; $10 student with ID)
are available from the ROS office at (585) 473-2234, through their website, www.ROSsings.org, or online at https://douglass.bpt.me. Students attending
the rehearsal may reserve a free ticket to the February 16 performance while at
the February 5 rehearsal if they show their student ID.
The Rochester Oratorio Society, the region's premier large mixed chorus for
adults, presents 4-6 performances annually and presents the international vocal
competition, CLASSICAL IDOL, each spring. Information on the ROS and its
productions may be found at https://ROSsings.org or by calling the office at
(585) 473-2234.
