A Deliberative Dialogue on America's Opioid Epidemic
Opioid overdoses claim more than 130 lives every day in the U.S., and are
now the leading cause of death among Americans under the age of 50. Monroe
County is no stranger to this problem. Between 2016 and 2018, nearly 300 people
died of opioid overdoes in Monroe County. On April 25th, from 1230-145pm in
Monroe B on the Brighton Campus, The Democracy Commitment at MCC, the
Politicos, the MCC Honors Institute, and the Institute for Humanities at MCC
are jointly sponsoring a campus deliberation titled A Deliberative Dialogue
on America's Opioid Epidemic. The conversation will focus on three
options: treatment for all, enforcement, and individual choice.
Because this event will take the form of a deliberative dialogue, it will be
driven by the contributions of those in attendance and moderated by MCC
students trained in moderating deliberative dialogues. To help anchor the
discussion, we will use an issue advisory provided by the National Issues
Forums. Please find the advisory, titled What Should We Do about the Opioid
Epidemic?, attached to this announcement.
This forum is free and open to both the campus community. If you or
your students are interested in attending, or you would like more information,
please email Joseph Scanlon at jscanlon1@monroecc.edu.
