Mapping Club Mapathon
Greetings from MCC's Mapping Club!
We would like to invite you to MCC's spring 2019 Mapathon! A mapathon is a
humanitarian mapping event that digitally connects volunteers to map some of
the most vulnerable parts of the developing world. Volunteers create maps that
governments and international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) use to
better respond to crises.
Not many people realize that there are large areas of the world that have
never been mapped before. Often, governments only have a very general idea
about the people who live there. Mapathons have significantly contributed to
the decisions to build schools, clinics, and wells in areas that were
previously vulnerable and underserved.
It's extremely easy and after a 10-minute introductory tutorial, you will be
mapping! The maps you create are uploaded online using open-source software, in
virtual real-time.
MCC's Mapathon will be held at the Brighton Campus on Wednesday, March 20th
from 6:15pm to 7:30pm in room 11-102. There will be pizza and cookies
provided!
If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please feel free to
email eolsson001@student.monroecc.edu or stop by our club office on the Brighton Campus, room 3-138N (located in
Building 3, in the clubs and organizations hallway). We also have weekly
meetings on Wednesdays at 5:30pm in our office.
Come join us for a night of fun. We hope to see you there!
Yours Sincerely,
MCC Mapping Club (Claudia, Catherine, and Erik)
