A Friendly Reminder Regarding Kitchen Safety
Because viruses, including COVID 19, can be spread via commonly touched
surfaces, it is of important to take proper precautions when utilizing shared
kitchens/kitchenettes. The single most effective way of stopping the spread of
a virus is to wash your hands before preparing your food and again before
eating. According to the CDC, plain soap works the best. Studies have shown
that antibacterial soaps and cleaners are possibly linked to
antibiotic-resistant infections, plus they don't kill germs much better than
regular soap. Effective handwashing includes working up a good lather, washing
for at least 20 seconds (including between your fingers, the palms and backs of
your hands, wrists, and under your fingernails) and rinsing well.
In addition to hand washing, frequent disinfection of commonly touched
surfaces such handles of coffee pots, microwaves and refrigerators, helps to
reduce the spread. Because food or grease buildup won't allow the disinfectant
to get through, surfaces should be cleaned before disinfecting. Disinfectant
spray and towels have been provided to all returning offices. Please contact
Facilities when your supplies need replenishing.
Lastly please remember, when in a kitchenette area, always maintain a
distance of six feet or more from others. If six foot distancing is not
possible, one person should only use the kitchen at a time.
