A Quick Note About What SI Leaders DO NOT Do:
It is important to remember that SI Leaders are not tutors or
teaching assistants. They utilize active learning techniques to
facilitate review sessions that promote further understanding of the material
and engage with students with intentional, guided questions to develop problem
solving and higher order thinking skills; they do not
grade, prepare exams/quizzes, or re-lecture course material.
They will not “spoon-feed” answers or
course content.
What SI Leaders DO:
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders are highly trained to
do the following:
- Promote higher order thinking and problem solving skills, to
develop independent, intentional learners
- Facilitate active learning through collaboration
- Combine how to learn with
what to learn--with greater emphasis on
how to learn
- Foster a low-stakes learning environment in which learning can be
messy--to bolster student confidence and reduce fear or anxieties generally
associated with learning
- Empower students to navigate their own mistakes while offering
guidance and support
- Utilize various questioning techniques to guide, probe, and
redirect thinking
- Help students connect and engage with content, to promote
meaningful learning and increase knowledge retention
- Support the development of skills that will aid student success not
only in the present, but across multiple courses and real-world contexts in the
future
- Provide assistance with technology-related issues that have
presented barriers in the current learning environment
Who Is Eligible?
SI Leaders must be current students at MCC
who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, organization,
and time management skills--and who have previously earned an A or a B+
in one or more of the courses listed above (Students will eventually
need to provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member to verify
eligibility):
