Raising Awareness During Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
Today is the first day of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and we’re
highlighting an important change which recently occurred: the National Suicide
Prevention Lifeline is now: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code to replace the
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 988 is a new, shorter phone number which
will make it easier for people to remember and access mental health crisis
services. This free, confidential resource is available 24/7 across the United
States to individuals who are thinking about suicide, are worried about a
friend or loved one, or would like emotional support. Simply call or text 988,
or chat 988lifeline.org. Please note
that the previous 1-800-273-TALK (8255) National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
number will also continue to function indefinitely.
One of our continued goals at the MCC Counseling Center and Disability
Services office is to share resources, spread awareness and compassion, and to
help break down the barriers that prevent people from seeking the help that
they deserve. Please stay tuned for more information, to be shared throughout
the month of September.
