Green Tip: Act to Help Limit Climate Change
The United Nations identifies 10 actions that
individuals can take to help with the climate crisis.
- Save energy at home: Lower heating and cooling use, use LED light
bulbs, hang clothes instead of using a dryer.
- Walk, bike, or use public transportation: Reducing use of cars
helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Eat more vegetables: Plant-based foods require less energy, land,
and water, and producing them results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
- Reduce unnecessary travel: When possible, meet virtually or take
trains instead of flying long distances for business.
- Stop food waste: When you throw away food, you are also wasting the
resources and energy used to grow, produce, package, and transport it. Also,
rotting food in landfills produce methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas.
Use what food you buy and compost leftovers.
- The 4 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Repair & Recycle
- Use renewable energy sources for your home: If possible, switch to
wind or solar for your home energy or install solar panels.
- Switch to an electric vehicle: This can help reduce air
pollution.
- Plant native species: Native plants are suited to
local environment conditions, so they require less water while providing vital
habitat for local birds, insects, and other wildlife while generally requiring
little maintenance.
- Clean up your environment: When you have to throw something out,
dispose of it properly. Humans, animals, and plants suffer from land and water
contaminated by improperly disposed garbage.
