Tasting the flavors of Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, Americans observe Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to
October 15, a time to celebrate and recognize the incredible contributions of
Hispanic and Latinx individuals in our culture, communities, and country whose
ancestors came from Mexico, the Caribbean, Spain, and Central and South
America.
At Monroe Community College we believe that celebrations like Hispanic
Heritage month is important in providing the space to teach and learn about
cultural history, and to examine the way in which these cultures are viewed
within America. Originally, Hispanic Heritage Month was Hispanic Heritage Week,
started in 1968 under President Johnson. In 1988, President Reagan enacted a
public law to celebrate a, 30-day Hispanic Heritage Month starting on September
15, the independence day of five Central American countries. Within the month,
other Latin American countries celebrate their independence as well.
With the on-going pandemic and having to stay home during the last seven
months, the Latino Empowerment Network (LEN) decided to celebrate the month
with array of mouth watering recipes that you might want to try out. We have
submitted several recipes that we have grown up with in our households and a
couple we gathered from faculty and students. Also as another contribution in
celebrating this important month, we've gathered a list of locally family owned
restaurants in our community that offer a variety of Spanish and Caribbean
cuisine's. Each restaurant brings in their own infused flavor to their dishes.
We encourage you to try one or try them all. If you want to be more ambitious
and test your culinary skills try one of the recipes in the mini cookbook we've
created. It's in English and Spanish.
We hope you take the time to download these attachments and give one or more
a try. It is our hope that next year we all will be able to get together in the
PRISM Multicultural Center and celebrate the month by sharing some of these
dishes.
Enjoy;
