Africa’s Grain Coast: The Transatlantic Journey to Freedom

Post-emancipation created challenges of how to solve the question of emancipated people.  The American Colonization Society (ACS), founded by Bushrod Washington and Daniel Webster, had as its primary goal the resettling of Blacks to Africa. This emigration and settling was fraught with challenges.  

Jackie Sayegh’s talk will focus on the creation of the ACS and the journey to the Grain Coast. What were the incentives offered to formerly enslaved persons to go to Africa? How successful was the repatriation?
