Virtual Lecture: Africa's Grain Coast - A Transatlantic Journey to Freedom
Africa’s Grain Coast: The Transatlantic Journey to Freedom
Post-emancipation created challenges of how to solve the question of
emancipated people. The American Colonization Society (ACS), founded by
Bushrod Washington and Daniel Webster, had as its primary goal the resettling
of Blacks to Africa. This emigration and settling was fraught with
challenges.
Jackie Sayegh’s talk will focus on the creation of the ACS and
the journey to the Grain Coast. What were the incentives offered to
formerly enslaved persons to go to Africa? How successful was the
repatriation?
