Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
MCC IS TESTING YOUR KNOWLEDGE DURING HISPANIC HERITAGE
MONTH
Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the history and countless contributions
that Latinos have made to the nation over the years. This month we also honor
the cultural richness of Hispanics, who come from Mexico, Central America,
South America and the Caribbean.
This month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. The time period
was chosen because there are several Latin American independence days
celebrated during that time period, including Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua (who all celebrate their Independence Day on
September 15th), Mexico (which celebrates its Independence Day on September
16th) and Chile (which celebrates its Independence Day on September 17th).
Today, over 60.6 million Hispanics make up the largest minority group
in the U.S., accounting for roughly 18% of the nation's total population. To
honor and pay tribute to all of the contributions Hispanic-Americans have given
to the United States — and the world — we celebrate Hispanic
Heritage Month.
The PRISM Multicultural Center along with Latino Empowerment Network (LEN)
is kicking off this month with our banner display of famous Hispanic people who
have contribute to America in so many ways. We challenge both students
and faculty to visit the display and see how many of these famous people you
can name by testing your memory and knowing your history.
We encourage faculty to bring their students and have discussions about the
contributions Hispanics have made to our way of life.
The display is located in the Student Center Atrium (Building 3)
near the bookstore
