MCC Continues to Monitor, Help Prevent Spread of the Novel Coronavirus

In conjunction with SUNY, MCC continues to monitor information regarding the global outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). While there is only one confirmed case of COVID-19 in New York state at this time, MCC has an emergency response plan. The plan would be enacted if needed by Monroe County and/or state officials.

While the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low, everyone can do their part to help prevent the spread of this and other illnesses. As a reminder, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following actions to help prevent the spread of coronavirus and other respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick. If you aren't feeling well, or experiencing flu-like symptoms, the CDC recommends that you stay home and consider seeking medical care.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

Individuals who are experiencing symptoms and may have traveled to areas of concern or have been in contact with somebody who has traveled to these areas, should call ahead to their health care provider before presenting for treatment.

Contact your health care provider, urgent care provider, or MCC Health Services if you have questions.

Thank you for staying mindful of this situation and helping ensure the overall well-being of our campus community.

A note regarding face masks:
Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of face masks is also crucial for health workers. The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
