Legal Obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

As we embark on a new semester, the Office of Disability Services is sending a message to the college community as it relates to supporting students with disabilities in the postsecondary setting.

Purpose
Monroe Community College provides a mainstreamed learning environment for students who identify themselves as having a disability in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.  Students are responsible for informing the College of their individual needs, and must provide the appropriate accommodation documentation for services.

The Office of Disability Services is the designated department responsible for maintaining disability related documentation, certifying eligibility for receipt of services, determining academic adjustments on case-by-case basis, and ensuring provision of those services. Our purpose is to create an accessible, inclusive learning environment, where disability is recognized as an aspect of diversity that is integral to our campus community and to provide equal access to campus programs and activities for all students.

Faculty/Staff Responsibilities

  • All faculty and staff hired by the College are obligated under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act to provide the approved accommodations listed on an Academic Accommodation Letter.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to discuss with each faculty member the implementation and utilization of their individual accommodations as they relate to the specific demands of each course.
  • All disability-related communications should be held in a private setting to ensure confidentiality.
  • Accommodations cannot fundamentally alter an essential learning outcome, therefore, faculty who have questions or concerns regarding the approval of an accommodation must immediately notify the Office of Disability Services.
  • Please refer any student who attempts to provide their disability documentation directly to you and/or requests for accommodations without providing an Academic Accommodation Letter directly to the Office of Disability Services.
  • All approved testing accommodations are coordinated and administered through Testing Services.
