Shared Responsibilities Related to Disability Compliance

As members of our college community, faculty play an integral role in our campuses shared responsibility in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act of 2008, which prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities.

Role of Faculty

  • Determine the essential elements and standards of the academic course.
  • Ensure all instructional materials are accessible.
  • Communicate classroom policies and practices related to attendance, grading, exam formats, extensions, and office hours, in order for the student(s) to determine what approved accommodations they may need to access for the particular course.
  • Communicate directly with the student to ensure a clear understanding of how their approved accommodations may be applied to the course.
  • All disability-related communications should be held in a private setting to ensure confidentiality.
  • Refer any student who attempts to provide you with disability documentation or requests informal accommodations to the Office of Disability Services.
  • All approved testing accommodations are coordinated and administered through Testing Services.
  • Direct all questions/concerns regarding accommodations for students with disabilities to the Office of Disability Services (e.g. concern arises related to an approved accommodation impacting the nature of the course, etc.).
  • Consult with Disability Services for support and guidance.

Role of Disability Services

  • Maintain confidential disability related documentation, certify eligibility for receipt of services, determine academic adjustments during an interactive process with the student, and ensure the provision of services.
  • Offer accommodation-related support and guidance for both students and faculty when questions or concerns arise.
  • Provide educational and resource support to the campus community to increase awareness regarding how to create and sustain access and inclusion for students with disabilities in all aspects of the college.
  • Promote an accessible, inclusive learning environment, where disability is recognized as an aspect of diversity that is integral to our campus community and to provide equal access to campus programs and activities for all students.
