AmeriCorps Service - An Opportunity for Many

Do you work with any students who are graduating in May and are looking to gain experience in the community before pursuing further schooling? Are any of your students not able to return to MCC this fall due to financial or other life circumstances? Many of the benefits of Rochester AmeriCorps can help folks gain skills, make money to help pay for college, pay for childcare, and begin a career in education and human services.

Rochester AmeriCorps, a program of MCC, is seeking applications from individuals who can commit to serving full-time for 48 weeks, Sept. 11, 2023, thru Aug. 11, 2024, in our education focused program. Members will serve in Rochester City schools, pre-collegiate programs, and community agencies and nonprofits to support improved academic outcomes, address learning loss that occurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and help prepare students for higher education and a career.

Essential member activities vary from site to site and may include:

Tutoring and other academic supports and interventions, facilitating enrichment activities, providing college and career preparation services, contributing to school and community events, supporting student groups, and conducting outreach to parents and students of the Rochester community. Members will build meaningful relationships with students, staff, families, and fellow Rochester AmeriCorps members to contribute to a positive community.

Benefits of service include:

  • Bi-weekly living allowance stipend of approximately $833 (estimated, pre-tax)
  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of approximately $6,895 upon completion of the program (1700 hours)
  • Child care subsidy for qualifying dependents 12 and under - up to $269/week
  • National Service forbearance on qualified student loans
  • Service in AmeriCorps is considered “eligible employment” for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
  • Individual health insurance
  • Living allowance not taken into consideration when determining SNAP eligibility
  • Specialized training, professional development, and networking opportunities

Our program places an emphasis on member training and development, supporting the members with a pre-service orientation prior to members starting at their host sites. We continue our training throughout the year with monthly member development days and special events and activities designed to deepen members’ connection to and understanding of our community.
