MCC Daily Tribune

MCC is Tobacco and Marijuana-free campus

This is a reminder that all MCC campuses are Tobacco and Marijuana-Free. MCC is maintaining a proactive approach towards safeguarding the health of employees and visitors by prohibiting the use of all tobacco products inside campus buildings and outside on campus property including parking lots.  Vaping on campus has continued to be an issue; students and employees have reported peers vaping inside campus buildings.

Campus locations include, but are not limited to:

  • All buildings on the Brighton and Downtown campuses, Applied Technologies Center and Public Safety Training Center.
  • Off-site and leased locations.
  • Outside property owned or leased by the College including open land areas, woods, fields, patios, parking lots, sidewalks, roads, loading docks and building entrances.
  • One hundred feet of the entrances, exits and outdoor area of the Downtown Campus in accordance with NYS Public Health Law Article 13-E.
  • All vehicles owned and leased by Monroe Community College or its affiliated organizations.
  • College-sponsored events at all locations.

“Tobacco” is defined to include any lighted cigarette, cigar, pipe, bidi, clove cigarette, electronic cigarette (vaping), hookah and any other tobacco, smoking and vaping product, and smokeless or spit tobacco.  This also includes all cannabis products.

If you see someone smoking on campus, and you are comfortable with talking to them, you can remind individuals of MCC's Tobacco-free, Smoke-free, and Vape-free Campus Policy (PDF). If you are not comfortable having this conversation, contact Public Safety at 585-292-2911 (or X2911) and indicate where you encountered the smokers. They will step up patrols and advise individuals of the policy.

Nicotine is addictive and breaking that habit can be very difficult. The goal of the policy is to educate individuals about the negative health consequences of vaping and smoking and chewing tobacco. Employees seeking assistance with smoking cessation or nicotine addiction should contact Human Resources, and students should contact Health Services.

While our focus is on education, it is important to remember that violating any policy could result in disciplinary consequences.
