Safety on Campus

Last week, we had two police activities on campus - one involving an illegal weapon and the other a false report. I suspect some may have thoughts and concerns about safety on campus. Given the long shadow that gun violence casts in our community and in higher education more broadly, these events might impact everyone’s ability to focus and feel safe while on campus. We are listening and here to support you during this time. MCC remains a safe place to learn.

  • The college followed its safety protocols.
  • There was no “threat” under the legal definition which would warrant a lockdown or shelter-in-place broadcast message.
    • The February 28 incident involved a student who violated college policy and state law by carrying a concealed weapon, but with no intent to harm.
    • The March 2 incident was a false report and no weapon was involved.

As part of our protocol, MCC continues to regularly review systems, processes, and security measures to ensure we are doing all we can to keep you safe. MCC Public Safety remains proactive in ensuring an effective, swift response to any incident. We ask the MCC community to immediately contact Public Safety at (585) 292-2911 if you suspect anything out of the ordinary.

If you have feedback for college leaders, we are listening and here to support you. Please email the college’s ombudsman, Dr. Ryan Messenger (rmessenger@monroecc.edu).

Counseling Services staff remain dedicated and committed to the emotional well-being of our students. Services are available to all students who may be struggling with the incidents last week or any other concern. Email Counseling Services (counselingservices@monroecc.edu), contact via phone at (585) 292-2140, or stop in on the Brighton Campus in Building 3, Room 103, or on the Downtown Campus on Floor 3, Room 310, to schedule an appointment. We also encourage students to visit the Counseling Center website for additional information and resources.

We are listening and here to support you during this time. MCC remains a safe place to learn.
