Food insecurity is a significant public-health problem in the United States today. The problem is particularly acute on community college campuses. Roughly half of community college students experience food insecurity. Food insecurity can be harmful to student learning and development. It can impact social relationships with peers, the ability to focus on schoolwork, mental health, and academic performance.

MCC has participated in multiple national Hope Center surveys on student basic needs. Sixty-one percent of MCC respondents in the 2016 survey were food insecure, and 48% in the 2019 survey. Survey reports, including reports with the 2016 and 2019 MCC respondent data, can be found on the M-Drive (M-Drive/Offices/Shared/Hope Lab Study).

MCC created the DWIGHT food pantries in response to the alarming 2016 survey data. These food pantries play an important role in addressing food insecurity for MCC students and have been a model for other institutions. DWIGHT is made possible in part by the generosity of faculty, staff, and students. Please consider supporting DWIGHT with a one-time donation or by setting up payroll deduction through the MCC Foundation.
