Professional Development Series: Creating an Inclusive Environment

Just for Faculty and Staff:

As educators, we can take small steps to make sure all students feel welcome and affirmed in our schools regardless of their gender identity. Being thoughtful about how we use pronouns is a meaningful way to support those whose gender might be different from what appears on their birth certificate.

Many students don't feel comfortable, or safe, expressing their true gender identity. By clearly telling everyone in the room that you respect people of all gender identities, you are telling all your students, "It's OK to be you."

Avoiding gendered language is one of the easiest ways to avoid mis-gendering students. Instead of saying "boys and girls" or "ladies and gentlemen," try "folks" or "everyone." Now make no mistake this is and can be confusing, especially to those of us to teach and work with all different types of students on a daily basis. The point being, some of us don't know what we don't know.

We are having a group discussion with Professor Gizzi for just faculty and staff on gender pronouns, answering many of our questions on what is proper, what not to do, what are the tough issues and concerns we may have and how we can help our students.
