BIO 266 - Biology of Vascular Plants

This course has been deactivated and no longer offered at MCC

4 Credits

This course covers major groups of living vascular plants, evolutionary origins of plants and their phylogenetic relationships. Includes anatomy, physiology, and reproductive patterns. This course is designed for science majors and students interested in plant science.

Prerequisite: BIO 156 with a grade of C- or better, or permission of instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Compare and contrast the structure and function of leaves, stems, and roots.
2. Characterize primary and secondary growth in vascular plants, including a description of the meristems from which they are derived.
3. Describe physiological processes involved in obtaining nutrition, transporting nutrients and water, and regulating growth, development, and reproduction.
4. Describe characteristics by which plants are classified and named; demonstrate an understanding of classification systems used for naming vascular plants.
5. Describe the evolution of vascular land plants and provide examples of representative fossil plants.
6. Compare and contrast reproductive patterns between seedless vascular and seed plants
7. Discuss and provide examples of ecological relationships among plants, between plants and animals, and between plants and fungi.
