Free Speech and Why It Matters

Advancing ideas and learning through debate – both oral and written – are critical parts of what make colleges and universities relevant as issues around diversity, equity and belonging continue to stimulate reflection and dialogue.  The challenge we face, however, is that these conversations require excellent leadership and opportunities for people of all backgrounds to speak and be heard.

The American Civil Liberties Union reminds us that despite our personal opinion about offensive or bigoted speech, it is protected speech as long as it does not “cross the line into harassment or targeted threats, or that creates a pervasively hostile environment for vulnerable students.” This year’s Essential Discussion on “Free Speech and Why It Matters” will challenge us, as a community, to create the type of interactions that promote a sense of well-being, respect and inclusion for ourselves and those around us.

Please join us on Thursday, April 20, 2023 from noon to 2:00 p.m. for a virtual presentation focused on bridging diversity, equity and belonging with speech on campus. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required and is open through April 14. A Zoom link will be emailed to registrants.
