their work.
One of the upcoming presentations is described below. Watch for additional
examples from other disciplines in future announcements.
The Change of Centuries Long Practices: The Evolution of Morality
within a Culture
Presenter: Ashley Garcia
Sponsor: Professor Robert Muhlnickel (Philosophy)
In this presentation, I explore how the methods of precommitment and
exposure, which appeal to emotions of honor and shame, were used to stop the
practices of foot binding in Asian cultures and the poaching of elephants for
the ivory of their tusks. I then describe Joshua Greene's theory on the
evolution of morality as a means of fostering social cooperation. Greene's
theory explains why the methods of precommitment and exposure were effective in
regards to the halting of poaching and foot binding. In conclusion, I show that
the effectiveness of these methods presents possibilities for bringing about
social change in the future.
