The criminal justice police program offers the high level of professional training required for this challenging and rewarding field. The law & criminal justice department developed the criminal justice police program in collaboration with a county-wide advisory board, helping to ensure the most relevant and effective curriculum for a successful career as a police officer or other law enforcement agent.

You may even earn course credit based on prior learning. Learn how to test out of courses and earn credit with CLEP.

In addition to police officer, the criminal justice police program lays a strong foundation for a wide range of front-line law enforcement positions, including:

  • Asset protection officer
  • Sheriff or deputy sheriff
  • Campus safety officer
  • State trooper
  • Patrol officer

Study Police Science in the Classroom and in the Field

The police option of MCC’s criminal justice program emphasizes the specific skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be an effective law enforcement agent. You’ll study the structure and functions of all things related to criminal justice, including the principles of law and justice, the structure of the courts, the importance of community involvement, and the role of corrections.

You’ll apply what you learn through an internship, enabling you to get workplace experience under the supervision of a public agency or private firm in the criminal justice field. Upon successful completion, you’ll be ready to apply for law enforcement positions in many municipal organizations and select federal departments, including:

  • Monroe County Sheriff
  • New York State Police
  • Town police departments
  • Private corporations

Description
The Police option of the Criminal Justice program is designed to meet the needs of state, county and municipal law enforcement agencies, as well as those of selected federal departments. It emphasizes the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to be an effective professional law enforcement agent in a democratic society.

The program provides the opportunity for preparation in the law process and science of criminal justice. This program includes an internship component.

Graduates who meet certain physical and moral standards may qualify for positions at the federal, state, county, and municipal level. Graduates may also be required to pass a qualifying civil service exam for employment.
Readmitted students who have not attended for 3 years (6 semesters) will be readmitted under the current program requirements.

1.Analyze components of the criminal justice system, including relevant criminal laws, procedures, and structural organization.
2.Identify essential qualifications for employment in criminal justice and criminal law-related occupations, including through workplace experience.
3.Apply the appropriate principles of law and justice to situations encountered in the criminal justice system.
4.Analyze issues related to diversity and equity in the criminal justice system at the local, state, and national levels.
5.Analyze appropriate responses to ethical issues encountered in criminal justice professions.
6.Explain the roles and interrelationships of the three main branches of the criminal justice system (law enforcement, courts, and corrections).
