This course has been deactivated and no longer offered at MCC
4 Credits
A lecture/laboratory course focusing on an in-depth look at the structure and function of skeletal muscle. Lecture topics include muscle physiology, strength adaptations, and muscle injury and disease. Laboratories include a thorough examination of muscles of the trunk, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot. Discussions include origin, insertion, function and palpation.
Prerequisite(s): BIO 142 and BIO 143 with a minimum grade of C or permission of instructor.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Discuss the different types of muscular contractions, muscle metabolism and factors contributing to fatigue.
2. Describe the molecular basis for muscle fiber contraction and the generation of tension.
3. Demonstrate a clear understanding of motor control and reflex activity.
4. Describe muscular adaptations across the lifespan.
5. Discuss the concepts surrounding muscular pain, disease and pathologies.
6. Demonstrate a clear understanding of skeletal muscle anatomy and action as it relates to: muscular origins and insertions, function of individual muscles, palpation and manual muscle testing and circulatory supply and innervations.
