April is Stress Awareness Month

April is recognized as Stress Awareness Month. This time of year can be particularly stressful for our students with the end of semester around the corner, finals looming, and end of semester assignments piling up. It is an important time to remind students to practice self-care and lean into their support systems when things get overwhelming. Some tips from The Counseling Center, Disability and Health Services Department are below:

  • Recognize stress: It is important to acknowledge when you’re feeling stressed and understand that it is normal. Being aware of stress levels is the first step in effectively managing them.
  • Practice Self-Care: Get enough sleep, eat well-balanced meals, exercise, schedule breaks into your day, make time for friends and activities you enjoy.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Incorporate mindfulness practices such as deep breathing, meditation or yoga. Students can utilize free resources such as TimelyCare and Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) for mindfulness activities and supports.
  • Time management: Share tips and tools with students for appropriate time management such as breaking tasks up into chunks, prioritizing workloads, using tools such as planners or apps that help organize tasks.
  • Seek Support: Encourage student to reach out to their support systems when needed. This could be family, friends, faculty members, providers and counselors. Our Counseling Center offers free mental health counseling to all currently enrolled MCC students and is a great resource for students to take advantage of to help manage stress in healthy ways. Additionally, TimelyCare offers 24/7 access to licensed mental health therapists for students to schedule virtual visits with. This is free for all MCC students enrolled in credit courses.
