Pistol Instructor Course

Program Announcement

The Monroe County Public Safety Training Facility (PSTF), under the auspices of the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), will be holding a Pistol Instructor Course at 1190 Scottsville Road, Rochester, New York. This course prepares attendees to deliver firearms curriculum and instructional objectives which emphasize methods of instruction, firearms handling, and the integration of evidence-based tactics designed to improve survivability of officers involved in a deadly-force encounter. The course combines lectures and practical exercises with a focus on operational safety, modern police firearms tactics and techniques, and proper instruction of fundamentals designed to give trainers the skills to develop and conduct firearms training. The program is presented in both the classroom and firearms range settings.

Students who successfully complete this course will receive four (4) credits from Monroe Community College.

Session Dates

Arpil 20 through May 1, 2026, 8:30am to 4:30pm

Prerequisites

Current NYS peace or police officer
Three years of experience in a police or peace officer position that requires carrying a firearm
Completion of the NYS DCJS approved Instructor Development Course

Special Notice

On Day 1, attendees will be required to complete a qualification course, achieving a maximum time of 35 seconds, including any penalties. There will be two attempts if needed to reach this standard. If an attendee does not meet the above standard on Day 1, they will not be admitted to the course.

Required Attire and/or Equipment

Attire:

Battle Dress Uniform (BDU)
Training shirt (Polo preferred)
Baseball cap

Equipment:

32 GB flash drive to obtain course materials, pen and notebook
Duty gear: belt, handgun, holster, two (2) spare magazines
1,500 rounds service pistol practice ammunition
NLTA weapons, protective gear, and 200 rounds of Non-Marking NLTA ammunition
Ballistic vest to be worn on the range
Shot timer – required for qualification and drills
Permanent markers
Handheld flashlight and batteries
Dummy rounds/snap caps (your caliber)
Tourniquet (required) and IFAK (suggested)
Appropriate eye protection and electronic ear protection (noise cancelling is recommended)
Chem lights or other safety lights for low-light shooting

Graduation Requirements

90% attendance (policy set by Monroe Community College)
70% passing grade on written examination
Passing grade on proficiency test

Course Tuition and Fees

Tuition: $868.00 (per person)
Estimated Student Fees: $113.00 (Student fees may vary each semester)
Agencies will be billed directly

Note: Monroe Community College may find it necessary to revise tuition and fees as necessary and reserves the right to do so.

Reservations

Please complete the online Law Enforcement Program Course Reservation Form no later than March 27, 2026. Submitting a reservation form does not guarantee admittance to a course. Confirmation notices will be emailed approximately 2 weeks prior to the class. Please remember to check your junk/spam folder.

To avoid double tuition billing, a Certificate of Residence is required from students who reside outside of Monroe County.
