President’s Emerging Leaders Fellowship (PELF)

The President’s Emerging Leaders Fellowship (PELF) is designed for MCC employees at the level of department chair or director and above who have the desire and capacity to enhance their leadership skills by engaging in a year-long immersive learning experience. Our goal is that each PELF class reflects the diversity of our College and represents each of MCC’s five divisions.

Purpose of Fellowship Program

To help realize its mission, Monroe Community College promotes a culture of excellence through investments in its employees to enhance their commitment and capacities to promote and support the success of our students. As such, the President’s Emerging Leaders Fellowship is designed for full-time MCC employees at the level of department chair or director and above, who have the desire and capacity to enhance their leadership skills by engaging in a year-long immersive learning experience.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in a customized learning experience that enables them to immerse themselves in the culture, operations, and decision-making processes of each of the five divisions within MCC.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across MCC and other higher education institutions.
  • Learn new ideas/strategies for setting institutional goals, establishing priorities and articulating strategies for accomplishing goals.
  • Discover your strengths and challenges as a leader and build capacity to enhance your leadership skills.
  • Gain leadership perspective from internal and external leaders.
  • Attend a national conference to explore diverse leadership strategies in higher education.
  • Duration of Fellowship: January 2024 – December 2024

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants/nominees must:

  1. be currently employed full-time at MCC
  2. have a minimum of five years’ experience in higher educations or other related areas
  3. be nominated by or supported by immediate supervisor [and division VP?]
  4. be willing to meet the requirements of the fellowship while continuing to fulfill your regular work obligations

How to Apply

The process, guidelines, and evaluation criteria are available online. Applications require support from the division lead (president, provost, or vice president), and due to the scope of the work in which the fellows engage, applicants are required to sign a confidentiality statement.

Participant Projects and Initiatives

Fellows have the opportunity to immerse themselves in diverse leadership experiences and complete individual and group projects.

Expectations of Fellows

  1. Minimum of one-week embedded with each of the following:
    • Provost & Vice President Academic & Student Affairs
    • CFO & Vice President for Administrative Services
    • Vice President for Economic & Workforce Development & Career Technical Education
    • Diversity, Equity & Belonging, Vice President & Executive Director MCC Downtown Campus
    • President

  2. Development of a learning plan in consultation with President / VPs / Executive Dean and / or mentors
  3. Log of learning experiences when immersed
  4. Mid-year progress review with President and designee
  5. Executive summary of overall learning experience (including reflection on goals)
