Sustainability Initiatives
At Monroe Community College, we believe a great campus is a green campus. The Facilities Department is dedicated to shrinking our carbon footprint, building smarter, and creating a healthier environment for our students and community.
"Green" isn't just a color here—it's how we operate. From the energy that powers our lights to the way we manage waste, sustainability is built into the foundation of MCC.
Green Buildings & Energy
We are committed to constructing and maintaining spaces that are as efficient as they are beautiful. MCC is proud to be home to multiple LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified projects.
- LEED Standards: Our newest facilities, including the PAC center, meet rigorous environmental standards for energy savings, water conservation, and the use of recycled materials.
- Solar Power: We harness the power of the sun! Our campus solar arrays generate clean, renewable energy every day, reducing our reliance on the grid.
- Stormwater Management: We utilize rain gardens and green infrastructure to naturally filter runoff, protecting our local waterways from pollution.
Talkin' Trash: Recycling on Campus
Managing waste responsibly is a huge part of our daily operations. MCC utilizes Single Stream Recycling, which makes it easier than ever for you to participate—no sorting required!
What Goes in the Blue Bin?
- Paper & Cardboard (flattened)
- Plastic Bottles & Jugs
- Metal Cans
- Glass Bottles & Jars
What Stays OUT?
- Coffee cups (the lining makes them trash)
- Plastic bags
- Food waste & wrappers
Sustainable Transportation
We are working to reduce emissions on and around our campus by making alternative transportation easy and accessible.
- Cycling: We are a bicycle-friendly campus. You'll find bike racks conveniently located near most buildings, and we are connected to the regional trail system for an easy two-wheeled commute.
- Rideshare & Bus: We actively encourage carpooling and utilizing the RTS bus system to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles on our roads.
Green Tips: How You Can Help
Sustainability is a partnership between Facilities and the campus community. Here are three simple ways you can help us reach our goals:
- Hydrate Responsibly: Use the water bottle refilling stations located across campus instead of buying single-use plastic bottles.
- Power Down: Turn off lights and computer monitors when you leave a classroom, office, or conference room.
- Print Less: Save paper by submitting assignments digitally or printing double-sided whenever possible.
