ENG 130 - Composition in STEM, Health, and the Applied Sciences

3 Credits

In this composition course, students will continue to strengthen their writing, information literacy, and critical thinking skills. Engaging in research, inquiry, and analysis, students will explore issues and ideas related to STEM, Health, and the Applied Sciences. They will gain familiarity with some of the different kinds of writing, reading, and research done in these fields (whether print or multimodal) and complete writing, reading, and research projects designed to continue to develop their understanding of and interest in specific academic and professional disciplines. This course may be organized around a broad topic or an overarching theme, such as climate change, medical ethics, or artificial intelligence. Additionally, an exploration of the disciplines themselves, how they shape and are shaped by cultural priorities and norms, will provide a focus for the course.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 101; or equivalent

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Reading: Employ critical reading, analytical, and interpretive strategies to evaluate and synthesize information from multiple discipline-appropriate sources.
2.Rhetoric: Apply discipline-specific rhetorical strategies to written and oral texts to meet the needs of specific audiences, contexts, and/or purposes.
3.Composing: Build on existing composition processes to produce a range of discipline-specific multi-modal projects.
4.Researching: Apply discipline-specific research methods and techniques to address a student-selected problem or issue; evaluate secondary source material and use that information ethically.
5.Conventions: Apply and adapt sentence and paragraph-level conventions, such as grammar, mechanics, style, citation, structure, and tone to intended audiences and contexts.
6.Critical Inquiry: Analyze how cultural priorities, values, and/or ethical norms shape and are shaped by the disciplines included in STEM, Health, and the Applied Sciences.
