HIS 105 - Western Civilization: Ancient and Medieval

A survey of Western civilization from the building of pyramids to the age of faith, chivalry, crusades and cathedrals. It will explore the ancient Mediterranean region—Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Greece, and Rome—and developments in this region and the rest of Europe up to 1300.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Describe and explain the main transformative events of western civilization from its beginnings until the Renaissance.
2. Describe and analyze the development of western society, including the structures of social classes, from the beginning of civilization until the Renaissance.
3. Break down the workings of the economies of western civilizations from the beginning until the Renaissance.
4. Explain the organization and development of the political systems of western civilizations from the beginning until the Renaissance.
5. Describe and analyze the development of western culture, including religious and philosophical ideas, from the beginning of civilization until the Renaissance.
6. Interpret and assess relationships and exchanges among Asia, Africa, and Europe from the beginning of civilization until the Renaissance
7. Evaluate and assess the soundness of assertions about what happened in history.
8. Demonstrate strong communication skills.
