BIO 138 - The Biology of Women

A lecture and discussion based course that focuses on the basic anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the female. The course also includes discussions of common reproductive and post-reproductive problems and their treatments and addresses contemporary health issues for women.

Prerequisite: BIO 133

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the structure and function of the pelvis and reproductive organs in both males and females.
2. Discuss theories and management of premenstrual syndrome.
3. List the different types of common sexually transmitted diseases and discuss their prevention and treatment.
4. Describe the pathophysiology and treatment of common gynecologic cancers including breast cancer.
5. List and describe the common non-cancer gynecologic conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, non-STD infections.
6. Discuss the biologic basis of contraceptive methods and their implications for women's health.
7. Describe the physiology of pregnancy and lactation.
8. Describe the regulation of food intake and body weight and discuss disorders of body image.
9. Describe aging-related changes relevant to women’s health and discuss the pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy for treatment of menopause symptoms.
