2018 Update

As technology rapidly advances, Technology Services consciously seeks opportunities to serve the College in an efficient and sustainable manner, and to choose solutions with the environmental impact in mind.

Technology Equipment Recycling: We securely removes all hard drives from laptops, servers, storage units, printers, personal computers, and computer components before sending the device to a recycling center.

Equipment Renewal and Replacement:  Technology Services has made considerable progress in retiring legacy equipment in favor of more energy efficient hardware. We manage the lifecycle of technology equipment, and when it is time for renewal and replacement we have been successful in significantly reducing the number and size of our hardware. Numerous pieces of network equipment were consolidated, resulting in a reduction of power consumption and cooling requirements. We have been able to provide server services on a smaller/greener footprint by utilizing virtualization and new more efficient server hardware.  The team also reduced the physical size of our enterprise storage by 95%, resulting in a reduction of power consumption of 83%, as well as a 90% reduction in cooling requirements.

Printing Services Consumables Recycling and Recovery:  Printing Services recycles all copy cartridges, modules, fuser modules, and web fuser assemblies.  We also utilize a silver recovery unit that captures the silver from scrap film and the silver that releases in the photographic processing solutions of plate-making and film development. The recovery of silver is important in meeting environmental regulations because it is a toxic pollutant. As a precious metal, its recovery also provides value to the college.

Printing Services Paper Reduce/Reuse/Recycle: Other Printing Services sustainable practices include using 100% recycled copy paper. The paper that we purchase is SFI (Sustainable Forest Initiative) certified, meaning that the paper mills we buy from demonstrate sustainable practices during the paper making process. We use duplex printing, electronic ordering, print full sheets to reduce cutoff paper waste, and repurpose printed one-side paper to produce scratch pads of various sizes. To eliminate any unnecessary reprints due to typos or incorrect information, we strongly encourage our customers to carefully proofread their documents before printing.
