Tips For Success

What Can I Do?

  • Use an academic planner to record your class schedule, assignments, important contacts, appointments, and "to do" list.
  • Plan out the best times to study based on your schedule.
  • Visit faculty members during office hours to ask questions.
  • Use the resources at the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC).
  • Utilize the MCC libraries and librarians.
  • Attend personal growth workshops sponsored by the Counseling Center.
  • Schedule an appointment with a counselor in the Counseling Center or the Student Engagement Center at the Downtown Campus to discuss your academic, career and/or personal concerns.
  • Register for your next semester’s classes early – as soon as you are eligible to register

Why Should I Seek Academic Advisement?

Do you want to be a teacher or maybe an engineer? We’ll help you achieve your educational and career goals, whatever they include. If you are undecided about what your future holds, we will help you explore the many major and career options available.

Academic advisement is much more than selecting courses for next semester. Effective academic advisement includes meeting with an advisor and developing an academic program of study that meets your educational and vocational goals. We believe that academic advisement is an essential component to the success of your educational experience at Monroe Community College.

Remember:

  • Contact an advisor early in the semester.
  • Bring important information to meetings with an advisor - for example, your work schedule and copy of transfer credits or AP/IB scores (if not already sent to MCC).
  • Come prepared to ask questions.
  • Seek advisement even if it is not required.

How Many Classes Should I Take?

Determining how many classes you should take is a very personal matter. Each student needs to evaluate what their life consists of and ask a variety of questions. For example:

  • Will I be working full-time, part-time, etc.?
  • Do I have family responsibilities?
  • Do I have any standing appointments?
  • Do I want to graduate in a specified number of semesters?

Each student is unique and should take a course load that accommodates his/her needs. To become a full-time student at MCC, you would take a minimum of 12 credit and or fee hours. Students not on academic restriction may register for a maximum of 18 credit hours without special permission. Any student taking less than 12 hours is considered part-time. Keep in mind that for each hour you are in class you should expect to study approximately two hours outside of class. As you determine the number of courses you plan to take it is also important to remember to budget time for eating, sleeping, studying, travel time and leisure. Finding balance is the key to success.
