ELT 134 - Introduction to Programmable Logic Controller

3 Credits


This course will provide the fundamentals of a programmable logic controller (PLC). Hands-on instruction and industrial type applications of PLCs requiring relay ladder logic control and a study of automated manufacturing and the functions of PLCs in an industrial environment will be provided. Topics include components of a PLC, memory organization, discrete input/output, numbering systems, logic gates, Boolean Algebra, relay ladder logic, timers, counters, word level logic, and troubleshooting.

2. Identify the main parts of a programmable logic controller
3. Describe how a programmable logic controller is programmed
4. Develop logic gate circuits from Boolean expressions
5. Convert numbers from decimal system to binary system or hexadecimal system
6. Write a Ladder Logic Program
7. Describe switching elements on input/output modules
8. Diagnose faults in a programmable logic controller controlled manufacturing process
9. Describe functions of programmable logic controller components
10. Test a programmable logic controller Discrete Output device for correct response
