Machining: Basic Machining, Manufacturing Pre/Youth Apprentice Pathway

Microcredential

Department: Applied Technologies

School(s): Applied Sciences & Technologies

The Applied Technologies Department offers two Machining microcredentials: Basic Machining and Manufacturing Pre/Youth Apprentice Pathway.

Basic Machining is a 9-credit credential that prepares students for immediate hire into various entry-level positions within the advanced manufacturing industry. These could include tool room attendants, operators, entry level machinist, lathe operator, mill operator and stock handler. It combines two theoretical courses, Machine Theory (TAM 101) and Blueprint for Machinist I (TAM 131) with a hands-on lab course (TAM 141) in which students apply skills on vertical mills and manual lathes. Students will gain knowledge and skills in speeds, feeds, material science, and properties with basic machining measurement and proper use of a vertical mill and horizontal lathe, and other basic power equipment in a machine shop. Students will apply proper measurement skills with appropriate tools such as dial indicators, calipers, micrometers, and height gauges.

The Manufacutring Pre/Youth Apprentice Pathway is a 12-credit microcredential serving two populations of students: youth apprentices and pre-apprentice students. It encompasses essential machining courses and a mandatory work-based learning experience that adequately prepares a student to enter an apprenticeship program or manufacturing career upon completion. Students are required to complete 150 hours of supervised on-the-job training while upholding industry standards. Students will also complete essential manufacturing courses (TAM 101, 131, and 141) prior to or concurrently with the Co-op experience (TAM 271).

Both microcredentials will ladder into multiple programs at MCC: Apprentice Training: Machine Trades (AAS), Precision Machining (AAS), Precision Machining (Certificate). The courses will also align with various New York State Department of Labor Apprenticeship Programs as MCC is an Approved Related Technical Instruction (RTI) provider to area companies.
