The 11-credit Correctional and Jail Services microcredential is relevant to those individuals going into a career in institutional corrections. It will allow learners to prepare themselves for immediate workforce readiness as a jail deputy and/or preparation for advanced study. Coursework will enable students to demonstrate competency in critical areas, including knowledge of the penal codes, effective communication during crisis, and the fundamentals of working in the correction environment. Students will also learn the history of punishment and corrections, inmate classification and custody levels, parole and reintegration, and the philosophy and application of best practices in corrections.

The Correctional and Jail Services microcredential ladders into the Criminal Justice A.S. and Criminal Justice: Police A.A.S. degrees at MCC.

Students must be ENG 101-ready for admission into this microcredential. Please see the Law/Criminal Justice Department for assistance with advisement and registration.

Requirements:

PEJ 101 - Physical Fitness I - Criminal Justice (2 credits)

CRJ 170 - Introduction to Corrections (3 credits)

CRJ 104 - Criminal Law (3 credits)
Prerequisites: CRJ 101, CRJ 103, or permission of instructor

SPC 144 - Communication and Crisis (3 credits)
