HIM 110 - ICD-10 Diagnostic and Procedural Classifications

4 Credits

This course will include the historical development of reimbursement, and emphasize the ICD-10 classification system. Course work will focus on official coding guidelines and use of ICD-10. Additional classifications are briefly studied. Instruction of coding issues by body system will be introduced, and laboratory includes coding exercises and application of coding principles.

Prerequisites: BIO 134, HIM 103 and HIM 104, each with a minimum grade of C, or permission of the instructor.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Apply inpatient diagnosis/procedure codes according to current guidelines.
2. Evaluate the accuracy of inpatient diagnostic and procedural coding by reviewing medical information.
3. Analyze the documentation in the health record, which might include the patient's progress, clinical findings, or discharge information to ensure it supports the diagnosis.
4. Utilize software in the completion of HIM processes.
5. Explain payment methodologies for the use of data required in acute inpatient healthcare reimbursement.
6. Explain the applications of Classification Systems, Nomenclatures and Terminologies.
7. Analyze current regulations and established guidelines in clinical classifications systems.
8. Identify discrepancies between supporting documentation and coded data.
