GEG 215 - Geography of Travel and Tourism

3 Credits

Geography of Travel and Tourism is the analysis of human leisure behavior and its socioeconomic impact and includes the exploration of local, national, and international attractions and destinations. As a survey course, GEG 215 is presented through two major themes: thematic and regional geography. Topics include travel vs. tourism, adventure travel, beach tourism, cultural travel, rural and urban tourism, service and volunteer travel, and special event tourism.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Recognize political units, destinations, and physical features important to the tourism industry.
2. Demonstrate familiarity with the latitude and longitude coordinate system using an atlas.
3. Distinguish major push and pull factors affecting tourism flow.
4. Categorize physical and cultural resources that affect tourism.
5. Contrast advantages and disadvantages of different modes of transport.
6. Distinguish broad climate zones based on latitude, relief, and maritime influence.
7. Design media summarizing pull factors of specific travel destinations.
8. Develop a cohesive individualized vacation plan based on tourist typology.
9. Assess the role of Rochester in local cultural, heritage, and special event tourism.
