EMS 112 - Applied Emergency Medical Services

7 Credits

This course will prepare competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains in a supervised lab and clinical setting. Through hands-on, simulation and clinical experience, this course will prepare students beyond an entry-level EMT course to function as EMS clinicians in the prehospital environment, where EMTs function as health professionals whose primary focus is to respond to, assess and triage emergent, urgent and non-urgent requests for medical care, and to apply basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and medical transportation to/ from an emergency or health care facility.

Course Learning Outcomes
1.Demonstrate assessment methods for emergent, urgent and non-urgent medical or traumatic medical conditions using an integrated critical thinking and systematic assessment approach.
2.Communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, family, other emergency responders or medical personnel.
3.Demonstrate proficiency in indications for and implementation of prehospital medical interventions appropriate to the EMT scope of practice.
4.Demonstrate appropriate emergency response procedures when responding to a call.
5.Select appropriate personal protective equipment to control the spread of infectious disease.
6.Demonstrate personal safety and emergency care precautions to prevent work-related injuries or violence in the workplace.
