HIM 100 - Introduction to Health Information

3 Credits

Introduction to the health record profession, allied health professions, historical development of health care field and the present health care delivery system. Introduction to the health information department and its relationship to other hospital departments. Numbering and filing systems, record retention, duplication, and storage considerations are explored. Health care registries are explored. Health information science principles are applied in the laboratory setting.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of various providers and disciplines to support documentation requirements throughout the continuum of healthcare.
2. Identify appropriate secondary data sources.
3. Apply retention/destruction policies for health information.
4. Apply policies and procedures surrounding issues of access/disclosure of protected health information.
5. Explain usability/accessibility of health information by patients.
6. Describe the differing types of organizations, which might include services, personnel or interrelationships, across the health care delivery system.
7. Comply with ethical standards of practice.
8. Evaluate the consequences of a breach of healthcare ethics.
9. Apply ethical standards of practice through an understanding of privacy, confidentiality and security of health information.
10. Describe the content and retention schedule of identified indexes and registers, and be able to contrast manual indexes and registers with computerized indexes and registers.
