SCI 132 - Integrated Science for Future Teachers II-The Living World

4 Credits

This is the second in a sequence of two courses designed to teach the basics of physical science, geological science, chemistry, and biological science in an interdisciplinary inquiry-based approach for students wishing to pursue a career in childhood education. This course focuses on concepts in biology and chemistry and how they interact in the world around us. Characteristics of life, cells, reproduction, evolution, ecology, the diversity of plants and animals are covered, along with chemistry concepts such as organic molecules, the chemistry of water, pH, buffering systems and the chemistry of DNA.

New SUNY General Education: SUNY - Natural Sciences (and Scientific Reasoning)

Retiring SUNY General Education: SUNY-NS - Natural Sciences (SNSC)

MCC General Education: MCC-CT - Critical Thinking (MCT), MCC-SCI - Scientific Reasoning (MSCI), MCC-BCO - Speaking (MBCO)

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Students will define the scientific method and apply the scientific method to investigate life science and chemistry problems in the laboratory.
2. Students will demonstrate proper laboratory techniques used in scientific inquiry and to investigate life science and chemistry problems.
3. Students will recognize and describe examples of significant contributions made to science by typically under-represented members of society.
4. Students will define and describe the importance of water, acids, bases and salts for all living organisms.
5. Students will recognize and describe the importance and functions of organic compounds synthesized by living organisms.
6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of cell theory, the diversity of living organisms, and the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.
7. Students will define and describe the importance of genetic material to all living organisms, and describe the molecular basis for inheritance and reproduction.
