This course meets the pre-admission chemistry requirement for selected health related programs. It is also recommended to students with limited mathematics and/or science background who plan to take higher level chemistry courses such as CHE 124 or 145. Topics include dimensional analysis, atomic structure, nomenclature, bonding, reactions, chemical calculations, periodicity, states of matter, solutions, acids, bases, and the pH concept. The laboratory features activities and experiments that reinforce the concepts presented in lecture.
Prerequisite(s): MCC level 6 Mathematics placement (or higher) or MTH 096/098/099/104/165 (or higher) with a minimum grade of C, or MTH 060 and MTH 160, both with minimum grades of C.

| CHE 110 - Chemistry in the Kitchen
3 Credits
Designed for non-science majors, this course does not require previous coursework in chemistry or math. In this course, students participate in hands-on activities during an integrated lab/lecture class. Students will explore and see applications of various principles of chemistry in the context of food and cooking and be able to answer questions like “Why does a strawberry smell sweet?”, “Why do pretzels taste salty?”, or “Why is a carrot orange?”

| CHE 124 - General, Organic, and Biochemistry
4 Credits
An introduction to principles of general, organic, and biological chemistry relevant to health-related professions. It is assumed students are able to apply concepts from introductory chemistry. Topics include: advanced dimensional analysis, redox reactions, reaction energetics, solutions, acids/bases, nuclear chemistry, drawing organic structures, functional groups, common organic reactions, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and metabolism. The laboratory reinforces concepts presented in lecture and introduces new laboratory techniques.
Prerequisite(s): CHE 100 or high school Chemistry with a minimum grade of C AND MCC level 6 Mathematics placement (or higher) or MTH 096/098/099/104/165 (or higher) with a minimum grade of C, or MTH 060 and MTH 160, both with minimum grades of C.

| CHE 145 - Preparation for General College Chemistry
4 Credits
This course should be taken prior to CHE 151 by students who fall into one of the following categories provided they have adequate mathematics preparation (see prerequisite and recommendation below): (a) students with no previous background in chemistry, (b) students with an average or below average background in high school chemistry, or (c) students in need of a review of basic chemical problem solving skills. Topics include problem solving using the factor-label method, dimensional analysis, linear relationships, graphing, and significant figures; the atomic mass system and the mole concept; chemical formulae and inorganic nomenclature; basic chemical reactions, balancing equations, reaction stoichiometry, and limiting reagent problems; atomic structure and the principles of chemical bonding; solution concentrations and stoichiometry. The laboratory features activities and experiments that reinforce the concepts presented in lecture.
Prerequisite: MCC level 8 Mathematics placement or MTH 104 with a minimum grade of C. Completion of or concurrent registration in MTH 165 is strongly recommended.

| CHE 151 - General College Chemistry I
4 Credits
This is the first semester of college chemistry and is appropriate for students interested in pursuing further studies in science or engineering. It is a mathematical approach to the principles of chemistry and assumes that students have had an above average preparation in chemistry. Topics include a brief review of problem solving using dimensional analysis, graphing, and significant figures; chemical stoichiometry; gas laws; thermochemistry; an in-depth treatment of atomic structure, periodicity, and chemical bonding; phase relationships. The laboratory features activities and experiments that reinforce the concepts presented in lecture.
Prerequisite(s): MCC level 9 Mathematics placement or MTH 165 with a minimum grade of C AND CHE 145 with a minimum grade of C or Chemistry Regents course grade of 75 or higher (students who did not take the Chemistry Regents course should contact the Department Chair.)

| CHE 251 - Organic Chemistry I
5 Credits
This is the first semester of a two-semester sequence in organic chemistry. The principles of bonding, molecular structure (with an emphasis on the three-dimensional aspects of structure and stereochemistry), polarities and acid-base properties are reviewed in CHE 251. These principles are extended to organic compounds and their reactions. The course concentrates on organic reactions and their mechanisms. The relationship between molecular structure, properties, and reactivity is emphasized throughout the course. Major topics discussed include: classes of organic compounds and nomenclature, thermodynamics and kinetics, addition reactions of alkenes and alkynes, stereochemistry, resonance and electron delocalization, aromaticity, and electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions.
The laboratory introduces the basic separation, purification, reaction and structure determination techniques of organic chemistry on the microscale level. Spectroscopic methods of analysis are also emphasized in CHE 251, including: ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis), infrared (IR), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). These spectroscopic methods are discussed and used in the CHE 251 laboratory.
Prerequisite: CHE 152 with a grade of C- or higher.

| CHE 252 - Organic Chemistry II
5 Credits
This is the second semester of a two-semester sequence in organic chemistry. The principles of bonding, molecular structure (with an emphasis on the three-dimensional aspects of structure and stereochemistry), polarities and acid-base properties introduced in CHE 251 are extended and related to additional types of organic compounds and their reactions. The course concentrates on organic reactions and their mechanisms. The relationship between molecular structure, properties, and reactivity is emphasized throughout the course. Major topics discussed include: reactions of dienes; substitution and elimination reactions; free radical reactions; and nucleophilic addition, substitution, and condensation reactions of carbonyl compounds. If time permits, special topics such as polymers and biomolecules will also be discussed.
The laboratory continues and builds on the basic separation, purification, synthesis and structure determination techniques of organic chemistry on the microscale level introduced in the CHE 251 laboratory. Spectroscopic methods of analysis are also emphasized in CHE 252. In addition to the ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis), infrared (IR), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopic methods introduced in CHE 251, carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS) are also discussed and used in the CHE 252 laboratory.
Prerequisite: CHE 251 with a grade of C- or higher, or permission of instructor.
