HSM 102 - Introduction to Homeland Security

3 Credits

This course is an introduction to the concept of homeland security. The course will define and explain homeland security. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be thoroughly analyzed and its mission will be investigated. This course will also address the threat of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive devices and the use of these weapons of mass destruction. The importance and basic elements of a planned response, methods used to prevent the importation of weapons of mass destruction into the U.S. and what is being and what can be done to prevent another large-scale terrorist incident in the United States will be covered.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Describe both the historical and evolving concept of homeland security within the context of national security.
2. Differentiate between the various homeland security threats, to include terrorism, manmade, technological, and natural disasters.
3. Examine the planning process for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive weapons of mass destruction in homeland security programs.
4. Identify the National incident Management System which integrates the resources of local, state and Federal Governments.
5. Describe the Department of Homeland Security: interagency processes and institutions: federal and state intergovernmental relations.
6. Identify other federal documents, plans and policies which influence homeland security in New York.
