CRC 111 - Surfing the Internet

1 Credit

A hands-on introductory course on accessing the Internet using a browser program. Students will learn the history of the Internet and it's impact on society. Students will be taught the basic tools of the World Wide Web for searching, uploading, and downloading. E-mail, newsgroups, and chat rooms will also be covered. Projects required. Basic knowledge of the PC, keyboard, mouse, and Windows are required.

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the origins of the Internet.
2. Recognize the process of connecting to the Internet.
3. Identify different features of a Web browser.
4. Develop effective Web search strategies to locate information on the Web.
5. Examine ways to communicate using various Webmail services.
6. Locate mailing lists, participate in chat sessions, explore and appraise science newsgroups, and create an identity in a virtual community.
7. Download software using FTP and Internet Explorer.
8. Identify security threats to their computer and personal privacy and implement basic countermeasures against each.
